Audiobook, narration, and VO mono delivery: when stereo room or dual-mic thins the voice

Narration feels warm with a stereo room, ambience bed, or dual-mic VO setup in headphones. On ACX, Audible, or other mono delivery checks, the voice thins, chest disappears, or the print sounds hollow. That is usually polarity and arrival time between dual mics, or stereo room/ambience under a centered voice that was never folded to mono before submit. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds under narration.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a VO compressor, not a de-esser, and not a substitute for mono audition of the delivery print. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What audiobook / VO phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the narration bus (or final delivery print). Flip the master (or a utility) to mono.
  2. A/B room/ambience muted vs open under the voice. Note what disappears: chest, presence, warmth.
  3. Solo pairs: mic A vs mic B, close vs room, dry VO vs stereo ambience return.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus (correlation meters), then listen on a phone speaker if you can.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between dual mics or close vs room

Flip mic B or room against the hero close when chest returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: dual-mic phase, dialogue / ADR.

2. Small delay align secondary path to the hero mic

Room or second mic arrives later (or earlier) than the close. A few samples of delay often restores body better than any widener. Different job from spectral repair: vs time-align.

3. Prefer one hero mono VO path for delivery

ACX and many audiobook specs want mono (or consistent mono-compatible) narration. Do not leave dual mics both hot into the print. Pick a hero, keep backup muted or low. Related: podcast dual-mic.

4. Keep stereo room / ambience subordinate

If you keep a stereo bed under narration for dramatic titles, pull it way under the voice and mono-check every chapter. Room should not fight the print. Related: stereo reverb / FX returns.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on narration

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make headphones lush and mono delivery hollow. Guides: vs imagers, Haas vs phase repair.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo ambience or stereo VO bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Audiobook / VO delivery checklist

1. Confirm mono (or mono-compatible) delivery requirement

ACX and many audiobook pipelines expect mono narration. Stereo masters that fold badly fail QC even if headphones sound fine.

2. Mono-check every chapter, not only the open

Room levels and dual paths drift across a long book. Spot-check middle and end chapters in mono. Related: master bus mono checklist.

3. Match mic path across takes and punch-ins

Changing mics or room contribution mid-chapter creates phase fights on the print. Guides: dialogue / ADR, DAW null-test + mono-check.

4. Preview on phone and mono utility before submit

ACX QC is not your studio headphones. Fold early. Related: phone / BT mono, mono check workflow.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery print in mono → polarity dual paths → delay-align secondary to hero → one hero VO for ACX/Audible → pull stereo room/ambience → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check every chapter → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a bed → fold again for phone / QC.
